What is Maharishi Vedic Medicine?Vedic medicine is the world's oldest tradition of natural medicine. It originates in the ancient Vedic tradition of India and includes what we know as Ayurveda. "Veda"means knowledge. Vedic medicine is a knowledge-based system of health care, founded on the knowledge of the fundamental laws of nature that govern health. Vedic medicine is a sophisticated system of natural medicine with a comprehensive range of procedures for the prevention and treatment of disease, as well as the promotion of ideal health. Over time and with the foreign domination of India, the comprehensive knowledge of Vedic medicine became fragmented and lost. Recently, working together with the foremost Vedic experts in India, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, founder of the Transcendental Meditation Program (TM), has systematized and restored Vedic Medicine to its purity and completeness in accord with the classic Vedic texts. This systemization of Vedic medicine is called Maharishi Vedic Medicine. How does Maharishi Vedic Medicine work?According to Maharishi Vedic Medicine, all the structures and functions of the human body are governed by an inner intelligence that underlies and administers all physiological processes. Disease is the result of imbalances and impurities that accumulate in the body over time and block the full expression of the body's inner intelligence. This leads to suppression of the body's natural self-repair, self-healing abilities. Vedic Medicine is able to identify these imbalances at an early stage, eliminating them from the body, and stimulating the body's inner healing mechanisms to restore health. Maharishi Vedic Medicine uses a holistic, multi-modality approach to promote balance in mind, body, behavior, and environment. The goal of this approach is to enliven the body's inner intelligence in order to promote health. Disease is treated by awakening health from within just as turning on a light dispels the darkness. Vedic SoundsAccording to tradition, the Vedic sounds contained in the Veda and the Vedic Literature are fundamental vibrations that structure the material universe, including the human body. This ancient understanding has been elucidated scientifically by neuroscientist Tony Nader, MD, PhD, who has described an exact correlation between the structure of the Vedic vibrations and the structure and function of the human physiology. This work provides the basis for practical techniques used in the Maharishi Vedic Medicine program, to prevent and correct disorders from the most fundamental level of physiological functioning. How Does the Physician Assess the Patient? When examining a patient, a physician trained in Maharishi Vedic Medicine takes into account the particular disorder, if any, but also the specific body constitution of the patient. According to the Vedic framework, three fundamental biological principles, called doshas, regulate the different functions of mind and body. These three doshas are called Vata (regulates movement), Pitta (regulates digestion and metabolism), and Kapha (regulates structure). The exact proportions of these three vary in each individual, giving rise to different bodily constitutions. Individuals with different constitutions have different requirements with respect to diet, herbal preparations, exercise, and other factors that promote health. The three doshas are further subdivided into numerous subdoshas with different locations and functions throughout the body. Imbalance in the doshas and subdoshas disrupts normal function and is responsible for health disorders. The subtypes of doshas and their combinations affect different organ systems. Based on this Vedic assessment, including pulse diagnosis, the physician prescribes a treatment program or, in the case of a healthy individual, a prevention program, that is tailored to the individual's constitution and pattern of underlying imbalances. The goal of the treatment or prevention program is to establish balance of the doshas and subdoshas, which allows for proper functioning of the body's inner intelligence and enhancement of self-repair mechanisms. The physician can correlate this assessment with the patient's conventional medical diagnosis, if any, and can integrate the Vedic medicine treatment program with conventional medical treatments the patient may be receiving. Maharishi Vedic Medicine has 40 different approaches to creating perfectly balanced health. There are over 600 scientific research studies to support its benefits. |
